Dream Factory: Cantopop, Mandopop, 1980s–2000
This exhibition explores the sonic and visual worlds of Asian popular music through the lens of the Chinese Canadian diaspora. Featuring newly commissioned works by artists and filmmakers Ming Wong, Liam Morgan, Bagua Artist Association, Steven Dragonn, Ho Tam, and Black Rhino, alongside community archives, fashion, and music ephemera, it considers pop culture as a site of memory, identity, and aspiration.Positioning Vancouver as central to the evolution of Cantopop and Mandopop, the exhibition foregrounds the legacy of composer Joseph Koo and his collaborations with lyricist Wong Jim. Dream Factory proposes that diasporic identity is shaped not only through tradition, but also through mass media, affective memory, and the collective experience of sound.
